On the last low moon of the year, Mary-Anne walked outside to find someone had taken the last of her fruit pickings. It had been left on the steps by the porch to sit in the cool night air, but the basket stood empty now, except for a few pulped berries. Crickets chirped in the distance. Engines could be heard howling far away, their brakes flooding along the hills. She took a cigarette from her pant pocket and pulled her hair behind her ears before lighting it. All of this in one smooth motion.

She let her eyes go dull while exhaling and searched for signs, squinting hard at the trees behind her house. Hardly anything moved. No one had been around for weeks, and her brother would only be here the following month. She sat on the steps and crossed her legs, taking her sweet time smoking the one cigarette she had allowed herself to smoke a day. She considered racoons or deer, but rejected that idea after considering how clean her backyard looked . There were no prints or droppings left behind, no spilled flower pots or unearthed grass. Animals had visited before, and they weren’t much for guests.

It had been a good day. Mary-Anne took in a good day’s work and rejoiced in this feeling. Her face was warm from being outside all day, and she picked at her nails thinking about this.

There is one section of our house that comes to mind more often than others. In it there is an old armchair which we got from a church on vine st. We brought it home with us, moved it from one home to two others, and here it is now. It’s orange and floral. Blankets circulate over it. It feels like folk.
